PARK INFORMATION

ADDRESS:

48200 Bear Creek Dr., Springville, CA

BACKGROUND:

Balch Park is located in the southern Sierra Nevada Mountains and features a grove of Giant Sequoia trees. In the mid-1880s John J. Doyle acquired a 160 acre parcel that was subsequently sold to the San Joaquin Light and Power Company in 1923. The president of San Joaquin Light and Power, Allan C. Balch, decided against logging the trees and donated the property in 1930 to Tulare County for a park to be named after him and his wife.

Located 53 miles from Visalia at an elevation of 6,500 feet, the campground offers seventy one 71 campsites that can be reserved from May through October. Balch Park also contains a small museum that pays homage to the original inhabitants of the area. Other activities for visitors include fishing, hiking, birdwatching, and rock climbing.
